Discretionary Absenses

The Howard County Board of Education allows the following excused absences: death in the family, illness, or religious obligation. The St. John’s Lane Attendance Team meets monthly to review student attendance. Our school staff reaches out to parents to inquire about excessive absences, late arrivals and early dismissals and to offer assistance, as needed. Please see the information regarding updated HCPSS attendance procedures in the REPEATED NEWS section below. This information was shared with our community in an SJLES Update on Monday.
A request can be made to Mr. Notari if your child needs to be absent for a non-emergency circumstance. Students are allowed up to 3 discretionary excused absence days per year.

Additionally, it is important that your child arrive to school on time and stay until the end of the day.  As a reminder, our school hours are 8:45-3:15. Excused reasons for late arrival or early dismissal include: illness, doctor's appointment, death in the family, or religious obligation.
