Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS)

What is PBIS?

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based, tiered framework for supporting students’ behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health. When implemented with fidelity, PBIS improves social emotional competence, academic success, and school climate. It also improves teacher health and wellbeing. It is a way to create positive, predictable, equitable and safe learning environments where everyone thrives. We use ‘students’ to refer to all children and youth in any educational or therapeutic setting (e.g., K-12 school, early childhood program, treatment program, juvenile justice program). Learn more about PBIS in schools.classroomsearly childhood programs and juvenile justice programs on those topic pages.

HCPSS Student Code of Conduct

The Howard County Public School System is committed to providing a safe, engaging and supportive learning environment where all policies are enforced fairly and consistently. HCPSS policies and regulations emphasize instruction and rehabilitation rather than punishment and are designed to foster and reward appropriate behavior and keep students connected to school so they can graduate college and career ready.

The HCPSS Student Code of Conduct provides a framework to support behavioral goals and disciplinary policies. All students are expected to be aware of and abide by this Student Code of Conduct. Parents/guardians are encouraged to read the Student Code of Conduct carefully and to discuss the information with their children. HCPSS employees will follow the Student Code of Conduct when supporting students and determining consequences for violations.

SJLES Jaguar Expectations

  • Kind
  • Engaged
  • Responsible
  • Resilient

Jaguar Pledge: "I am a Jaguar from St. John’s Lane. Today I will be Kind, Engaged, Responsible, and Resilient. This will help me, my class, and my school be the best we can be!"

Teaching our Jaguars our Expectations

At the beginning of school year it is very important that we thoughtfully introduce and/or reintroduce our school-wide behavior expecations to our students. Teachers provide daily lessons introducing students to schoolwide and classroom behavior expectations. Our teachers facilitate lessons with our students to teach them what it means to be Kind, Engaged, Responsible, & Resilient at SJLES and in our community. We explicitly teach our students about our schoowide behavior system of 1, 2, 3, Magic and how our students can earn Spot-O-Grams which are cashed in monthly for rewards. We facilitate voice volume lessons and lessons on hallway expectations and Jaguar Stops that are present throughout our school. Related Arts staff introduce their classroom rules to students at the beginning of each class during the 1st week of school, as well.

As a school we are very intentional in ensuring that we keep our schoolwide expectations consistent for our students across their school day and throughout their years at SJLES. Our students also meet with our administrative team to review their Rights and Responsibilities as HCPSS students. This all happens while laying the foundation of a positive classroom community, healthy relationships across our students' school day, and an overall happiness to attend their school St. John's Lane Elementary. We revisit these schoolwide expectations trhoughout the school year with our students, as needed.

Quarterly PBIS Celebrations and Jaguar Huddles

At the end of each quarter we celebrate our students’ Kind, Engaged, Responsible, & Resilient behaviors. Our first quarter PBIS Celebration is Pumped Up Recess. This is truly a schoolwide favorite!  Pumped Up Recess is a special 45-minute recess where staff, administrators, and students all come together to play, dance, and celebrate the Jaguar Expectations demonstrated throughout this first marking period. We are looking forward to celebrating with our students and showing our Jaguar Pride!

This year, in addition to our PBIS Celebrations each grade level team will also facilitate a Jaguar Huddle. Last school year we surveyed our students to learn how they like to be recognized and celebrated. We then designed our Jaguar Huddles with our students’ voices at the forefront of our planning. The goals of these Huddles are to:

  • further build community within each grade level team

  • uplift and reflect upon how our students’ successfully demonstrated our Jaguar Expectations throughout the quarter

  • celebrate achievements

  • reflect upon areas for growth and set goals for the following quarter

  • spend quality time together as a grade level team

We believe these Jaguar Huddles will perfectly pair with our PBIS Quarterly Celebrations to explicitly recognize and celebrate our students for all they do to make SJLES such a wonderful place to learn and grow.

 Quarterly Celebration Scope & Sequence
