SJLES Updates 5/5/22

Thu, 05/05/2022 - 1:35pm

Greetings SJLES Families,

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week, SJLES! Ms. Coleman and I wanted to thank our community for your on-going support and encouragement of our outstanding teachers. We couldn’t ask for any more from this wonderful group of educators. Our teachers lead with your children at the forefront of every decision made here at SJLES. Their dedication, intentionality, kindness, and care for our Jaguars is always clear and overt in their words and actions. If you have a few minutes to send a brief note or email of gratitude to a staff member who is making a difference in the life of your child, please don’t hesitate to do so. A heartfelt thank you to our PTA for celebrating our teachers and staff this week and for your support throughout the year! Hope everyone has a great rest of the week!

Sincerely,

Dan Notari

SJLES Principal

May is Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage month commemorates two events in May, the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the USA on May 7th, 1843 and the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869 that was built with the help of nearly 20,000 Chinese immigrants. Here at the Lane, students and staff will be honoring this month through various read aloud stories, sharing during community circles, art projects, music activities, learning about AAPI members, and much more!

REPEATED NEWS

FIeld Day Overview UPDATED

Get ready for another fun-filled Field Day at SJLES!  Field Day will take place on FRIDAY JUNE 3, 2022 for students in all grades. If needed, the rain date will be on Friday, June 10, 2022.  The time for Field Day will be 9:15 am-3:00 pm.

Many parent volunteers are needed to make Field Day a fun experience for everyone.  Enthusiasm is the only expertise needed to manage the activities.  Parent volunteers and staff members will run the stations. Classroom teachers will accompany classes and supervise the children. If you can contribute your time and energy for Field Day, please visit this link for sign-up genius by FRIDAY MAY 27, 2022.  Volunteer slots are available as full day (9:15 - 3:00), half day morning (9:15 - 11:45), and half day afternoon (12:30 - 3:00) but volunteers can sign up for any block of time they are available. We need many volunteers to make our Field Day a success! When you volunteer, information will be sent home with your child the week of Field Day with your assignments and station directions.

As with all HCPSS volunteers, please complete the following steps by Friday May 27, 2022 to volunteer for Field Day:

1.    Complete this brief volunteer confidentiality training, fill out the form, and bring it to school.

2.     Complete this brief child abuse training, complete the linked certificate, and bring to school.

Our Physical Education (PE) Team thanks you for your continued support of our PE program and department.  An all-day Field Day is a major event and can only happen if we all work together for the students.  We welcome anyone who wants to volunteer to make this day a good time for everyone.

Field Day Shirts

We encourage our Jaguars to wear a shirt with their "grade color" to school on Field Day. Wearing the grade color helps identify our students' location throughout the day and adds to team spirit. If you don’t have a shirt with that specific color try to find one as close to the color as possible.  We will not be providing Field Day shirts to students this year due to funding, however we are providing an option for families to purchase a shirt to commemorate field day. Please note that purchasing field day shirts is completely optional. Here are the Field Day grade colors:

  • Kindergarten - Kelly Green

  • 1st Grade - Gold

  • 2nd Grade - Carolina Blue

  • 3rd Grade - Red

  • 4th Grade - Lime Green

  • 5th Grade - Purple

Order forms were sent home with students on Monday, 4/25, and can be returned to your child’s homeroom teacher. Orders can also be placed online at https://sjles22.itemorder.com . Please note that the purchase deadline for all orders is Friday, 5/6. Once again, I want to uplift that purchasing Field Day shirts is completely optional. We are very excited for the return of in-person Field Day here at The Lane!

SJLES Student Expectations Survey - 96 Parent Responses

Our SJLES staff is so proud of our Jaguars! Our students consistently demonstrate outstanding behaviors and traits within our school building and throughout our community. We here at SJLES are grateful to our families for our collaborative partnership. This partnership helps our Jaguars learn the skills, knowledge, and confidence to positively influence our larger community today and prepares them for rewarding employment in the dynamic, international workplace they will be leading once they leave the comforts of HCPSS years from now.

Our SJLES student expectations are at the core of our instruction, social emotional learning, and our school climate and culture. Our current expectations are Respectful, Responsible, & Ready to Learn. In order to ensure that these guiding principles best serve our current and future Jaguars we are seeking input from our SJLES staff, students, families, and other community stakeholders.

Please consider completing this brief SJLES Student Expectations Survey by Friday, May 6th, to help shape our approach to assuring the academic success and social-emotional well-being of each SJLES Jaguar going forward. We appreciate your time, insights, and partnership. Thank you!
